Hope, her name was Hope. How had she ever forgotten that? How did someone forget their own name?

She had a family, a father and Dice was the brother of her heart even if he was only her cousin. She heard tears in her father’s voice when it came over the line and it took River almost an hour to convince him to wait to see her.

Now she stood at the mouth of a cave that made her heart quiver. River’s hand was gentle on her back, but evil lurked in the darkness there.

“Lucian will keep you safe.”

She knew there was something River wasn’t telling her, she could feel it somehow, but she didn’t feel comfortable pressing him.

She was captured by the form of a man walking toward her, he was tall and slender just as the man from her memories, but this man looked older, worn somehow, but he had her eyes and she knew him.

She choked on tears as he walked her way and opened his arms. She ran to him. Just the scent of him called back memories from her past and filled her with warmth.

“Papa.” She sobbed and felt his arms tighten around her. He kissed the top of her head and spoke to River.

“I can never repay this River. If I can be of help, I am at your service.”

“Keep her safe, that’s all I will ever ask.” River said and walked toward the forbidding darkness of the cave.

“Please, Papa, don’t let him go in there alone.” Hope begged.

“This is something he must do on his own. He will be safe.” Her father looked down into her face. “I think he has found a reason to be.”

Hope looked away, strained her eyes to see River, but the darkness has swallowed him and her heart cried out for him.

“I have to go after him. He shouldn’t have to do this alone.”

Lucian fought against a smile. “If I know anything at all about River, I know that he will not fight this fight alone, but he doesn’t realize that yet either. I will not stop you from going in there, but I will ask you to be sure. It is a dangerous place.”

“I’m not afraid.”

Lucian nodded. She could feel his reluctance tugging at her like a string, but he allowed her to go. That meant more than she would ever be able to express. This was her choice.

She made her way into the inky darkness. Smells she could not identify threatened to overwhelm her as she took step after step into the unknown. Her sneaker slipped in something she didn’t want to identify and she heard breathing too near her.

“I mean you no harm.” Came a gravelly voice from the darkness.

Hope’s heart leapt into her throat. “What do you mean then?” She whispered.

“You called to me.”

She shook her head and then realized he couldn’t see her. “I didn’t…”

“The other you. She calls to us. I will guide you to your mate.”

Hope started to deny the word mate, but the words stuck in her throat.
